Background: William Essuman-Gwria SEKYI (1892-1956), also known as Kobina Sekyi, was a Ghanaian novelist, playwright, poet and nationalist, born in 1892 in Cape Coast, which is said to be the centre of Gold Coast (Ghana) nationalism. He attended the prestigious Mfantsipim Boys’ School, which was later renamed Wesleyan High School, and went on to study English Literature at the University of London. A fellow African student persuaded him to give up English Literature in favour of a degree in Philosophy. Thoroughly disillusioned with the British and their values, Sekyi returned to Cape Coast in 1913 and re-established his place in Akan-Fanti culture.
