Summary and Analysis of God’s Bits of Wood by Sembene Ousmane

Hadi Dia: She is one of the women who testify at the trial of Diara.

Hadramé: He is a shopkeeper whose shop is named after. He is a hard-hearted fellow who would not do anything to help old Ramatoulaye despite all her pleadings.

Houdia M’Baye: She is Anta’s mother. She is a widow of Badiana who lost his life in the fight during the strike. She has given birth to nine children who are metaphorically being referred to as “God’s bits of wood.” Like Old Niakoro, her sudden death shows the helplessness of women in the hands of the stooges of colonial masters. She is bold and courageous. She is also compassionate. Because she would not want any evil to befall Ramatoulaye that is why she decides to follow her to the station. Even when other women run away she continues to wait to see what will happen to Ramatoulaye. Unlike others who lose their lives in the struggle, M’Baye’s death is more pathetic because she leaves behind nine children to fend for themselves. Having lost her husband in the same manner, she is killed by the security agents leaving behind nine children to become orphans. M’Baye represents poor African widows who became victims of colonialism.
